The June issue of Environment & Climate News reports the Alaskan state government has thumbed its nose at Congress and federal government officials who are stonewalling on natural resource recovery in the National Petroleum Reserve and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The state has opened more than one million acres for recovery in areas near the Reserve and ANWR.

In other state news reported this month: Rhode Island has taken a free-market approach to energy policy, allowing consumers to choose whether they’re willing to pay for electricity from solar and wind; California legislators take up a measure that would monitor chemicals in the bodies and breast milk of residents; Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack vetoed landmark legislation on livestock operation emissions; Californians oppose a proposed Los Angeles ban on smoking on beaches; and Washington Governor Gary Locke signed a costly greenhouse gas bill.
