Amber Gunn: Word Games With Washington Income Tax Proposal

July 9, 2010

Washington is one of just seven states with no personal income tax. Amber Gunn of the Economic Policy Center at the Evergreen Freedom Foundation in Olympia, Washington, joins this Budget & Tax News podcast to discuss a November ballot measure to impose a graduated income tax on high-income earners in the state -- and the supporters' attempts to call it an excise tax to get around the state constitution's prohibition against such a tax. Washington's attorney general warns if the measure passes and is called an excise tax, the IRS probably would not allow the state taxes to be deducted from federal income taxes.
