A strong move is afoot to put many services traditionally done by police departments in the hands of private security firms, says Economics Professor Simon Hakim of Temple University. Government budget stresses, lower rates of violent crime, and growing rates of complex crimes such as identify theft and cybercrime are all playing a role in the shift to private security, he says.
