Vern Williams: A Teacher's Thoughts on the Common Core

December 14, 2012

The New York Times recently held a symposium to air different thoughts about national education standards and tests, called the Common Core. One author who participated joins the School Reform News podcast to expound on his essay. Middle school math teacher Vern Williams has sat on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel and developed honors math curriculum for the school where he has taught for approximately 30 years in Fairfax, Virginia. He explains why good, experienced teachers ignore education fads, why education officials should consult more teachers when crafting policies and why they often don't pick the best teachers to consult, and his opinion of Common Core standards and tests.
