Robert Pondiscio: Improving Civic Literacy

August 12, 2013

It is a plain and sad truth that the vast majority of students in America graduate civically illiterate. In 2010, the latest national test on this topic,  less than half of eighth-graders knew the purpose of the Bill of Rights, and only 1 in 10 could pick a definition of the system of checks and balances. Since our form of government demands self-government, which in turn demands civic literacy, this is a cultural crisis. Some people are working to address it, and that includes Robert Pondiscio. He’s the executive director of Citizenship First, and joins the podcast to discuss teaching children citizenship, what he's learned from E.D. Hirsch, and his new venture.
