Budget & Tax

  • The February issue of Budget & Tax News features Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and reports on SCHIP, Internet taxes, and our increasingly “European-style” economy.
  • Heartland staff were published by the Chicago Sun-Times, Washington Post, Providence Journal, and other newspapers and appeared on television and radio.
  • Legislative Specialist John Nothdurft distributed Research & Commentaries on publicly funded sports stadiums, film tax subsidies, and SCHIP.

Finance and Insurance

  • Legislative Specialist Matthew Glans was published by the Orangeburg (South Carolina) Times and Democrat and Christian Science Monitor.
  • Glans distributed Research & Commentaries on unemployment insurance and the proposed expansion of Federal Housing Administration programs, and a media advisory discussing State Farm’s decision to pull out of Florida’s homeowners insurance market.

Environment

  • The February issue of Environment & Climate News reports on California’s carbon dioxide emissions plan, renewable energy, climate change, air pollution, and asthma inhalers.
  • We distributed 30,000 copies of Nature, Not Human Activity, Rules the Climate to scientists who have signed a petition challenging global warming alarmism.
  • Heartland staff were published by or quoted in the Naples (Florida) News, Chicago Tribune, Hartford (Connecticut) Courant, Detroit News, and other newspapers.
  • Senior Fellow James M. Taylor addressed audiences in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico and at the Western States Land Commissioners Association Winter Conference. Science Director Jay Lehr debunked global warming myths in Mankato, Minnesota.

Health Care

  • The February issue of Health Care News discusses Washington, DC’s “act fast and get it passed” health care agenda, Medicaid, autism, SCHIP, and more.
  • We mailed copies of More Choices, Better Health to more than 1,800 health care journalists.
  • Greg Scandlen, director of Consumers for Health Care Choices, was quoted by Insure.com, Employee Benefit News, and Insurance & Financial Advisor Monthly. He was published by the Fort Wayne (Indiana) Journal Gazette.
  • Health Care News Managing Editor Jeff Emanuel was published by the Panama City (Florida) News-Herald, and Health Care News articles were cited by Drug Week, Medical Devices & Surgical Technology Week, and the Reading (Pennsylvania) Eagle.

Infotech & Telecom

  • The February issue of InfoTech & Telecom News covers the Consumer Electronics Show, “Internet lobbying,” rural and muni wi-fi, and New York’s proposed “iTunes tax.”
  • InfoTech & Telecom News Managing Editor Jim Lakely was published by the Chicago Sun-Times and New York Post.
  • Lakely and Brian Costin, Heartland’s assistant director of government relations, attended the Consumer Electronics Show.

Education

  • The February issue of School Reform News reports on rallies in Florida and Arizona, charter schools, school funding, and the appointment of Arne Duncan for U.S. Secretary of Education.
  • Senior Fellow Robert Holland was published by the Vacaville, California Reporter and The Wall Street Journal.
  • Legislative Specialist Zonia Pino participated in a roundtable discussion on school choice chaired by Illinois state Sen. Dan Cronin.

Urban Affairs

  • Nearly 3,000 copies of Rediscovering Black Conservatism, a new book by Heartland Senior Fellow Lee H. Walker, were distributed in February.
  • Local Legislation Manager Ralph W. Conner has been working with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) on gun control and energy/environment issues.
