"The evidence is summarized in the Surgeon General’s 'Smoking and Health' report of 1979, which lists several major studies showing that smokers of a half-pack of cigarettes per day have about one-quarter the lung cancer risk of two-pack-a-day smokers, making for a virtually direct proportional relationship. In other words, the dose makes the poison in the case of smoking, just as for any other toxin.”
