Reid Abandons Warming Bill -- for Now

James M. Taylor –
July 23, 2010

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced that he will not be presenting global warming legislation before the August recess, which likely kills it until the November elections.

This is welcome news for sound science, the economy, and common sense, but we are not out of the woods yet by a longshot. Harry Reid still dreams of introducing legislation during the lame-duck Congressional session after the elections, when many Senators will feel unaccountable to voters. He also is considering drastically scaled-back legislation that can then be turbo-charged during so-called reconciliation. Another plan calls for passing renewable power mandates as a backdoor global warming bill under the guise of a separate “energy bill.” And finally we have the Environmental Protection Agency doing everything in its power to make an end run around our elected representatives to force carbon dioxide restrictions on the American people whether we want them or not.

Congress’s decision to forego global warming legislation is good news for the American people, but the alarmists have yet to throw in the towel.
