CHICAGO, March 10, 2004 --Attorney Maureen Martin has been named Senior Fellow for Legal Affairs at The Heartland Institute. Martin will join seven other Senior Fellows who are among the nation's most knowledgeable public policy experts. Heartland Senior Fellows write scores of articles--from letters to the editor to full-blown policy studies--conduct media interviews, testify at legislative hearings, and speak to audiences ranging in size from 10 to 10,000.
Formerly a partner in a large Chicago law firm, Martin has been in the private practice of law for more than 22 years, concentrating in general litigation and environmental law. She was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1981 and has also been admitted in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She has received the highest possible rating of AV for legal ability and legal ethics from Martindale-Hubbell. From 1991 through 2002, she was an adjunct professor of environmental law at Loyola University Chicago.
In her private practice, Martin has defended clients in class action litigation, antitrust cases, environmental enforcement cases, Superfund, commercial disputes, property rights cases, and insurance coverage litigation. She has written and spoken extensively on subjects such as lawsuit abuse, litigation, and gun control. She has also authored articles and speeches on complex aspects of environmental law, such as treatment of environmental liabilities in bankruptcy, environmental criminal law, use of experts in environmental litigation; environmental considerations for those who inherit contaminated property, including possible deductions for estate tax purposes; real estate and corporate transactions involving contaminated property; property rights; successor corporation liability; environmental insurance coverage, and treatment of environmental liabilities under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Martin is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where she was a published member of the law review, recipient of an American Jurisprudence Award, a member of the Moot Court Board, and a legal writing instructor.
