CHICAGO, March 31, 2004--Global warming legislation introduced yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives is a scam, according to Heartland Institute Science Director Dr. Jay Lehr. The legislation is similar to a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate last year by John McCain (R-Arizona) and Joe Lieberman (D-Connecticut). The Senate bill was defeated in October, but McCain and Lieberman reintroduced it yesterday.
Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest (R-Maryland) and John W. Olver (D-Massachusetts) are the principal sponsors of the House version.
"We have reached a point where most Americans recognize that global warming, and legislation like this that proposes to stop it, is a scam" said Lehr. "It puts money in the hands of radical environmental advocacy groups with nothing better to do than try and figure out what heats the Earth ... It's the sun, stupid."
Lehr also warned the misguided global warming legislation will drive up the cost of energy to the average consumer and do little or nothing to help the environment.
Dr. Lehr is Science Director and Senior Fellow for the Chicago-based Heartland Institute, a national nonprofit organization. Lehr has spoken before more than 1,000 audiences on topics ranging from global warming to nuclear energy and is the editor of Rational Readings on Environmental Concerns, a 900-page textbook now in its third printing.
