Heartland Institute Joins Gear Up Florida

January 05, 2012

TALLAHASSEE -- The Heartland Institute, a free-market think tank with an office in Tallahassee, announced today it would join the Gear Up Florida Coalition devoted to fighting auto insurance fraud.

Heartland, which is headquartered in Chicago, also has offices in Washington, DC, Austin, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio. The Gear Up Coalition includes a diverse selection of business, consumer, and insurance groups. The following quotes may be used for attribution.

“Florida has a very serious auto insurance fraud problem and, in some areas, there’s a real danger that the automobile insurance system could collapse entirely. As a result, there’s a real danger that Florida could end up with an auto insurance system every bit as troubled as its homeowners’ insurance system unless major reforms take place during the 2012 session.”

“We are very happy to join this diverse coalition to call attention to a big problem that is plaguing Florida residents. There is no question that the current auto insurance crisis is one that must be addressed sooner rather than later. Forcing hard-working Floridians to pay exorbitant auto insurance premiums to cover fraud and abuse is not only destructive to the state’s economy, but it is just plain wrong. We look forward to working with this diverse group to shed light on this issue, which will hopefully encourage the passage of meaningful reforms this year.”
