Foundation Relations Manager (Part-time/Contract)

Reports to: Director of Development
Location: Remote; Chicago, IL; or Washington, DC (preferred)
Status: Part-time, Contract (approximately 12–15 hours per week)
Compensation: Hourly, commensurate with experience (estimated $50–$90/hour) possible eligibility for a performance-based bonus.

The Foundation Relations Manager oversees The Heartland Institute’s institutional fundraising program, managing active grants and pursuing new opportunities that align with the organization’s mission. This position requires strong writing, research, and project management skills to ensure timely, high-quality proposals and reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage Heartland’s portfolio of active foundation grants (approximately 14) and ensure timely submission of proposals, interim, and final reports.
  • Research and identify new foundation prospects aligned with Heartland’s priorities.
  • Write and edit proposals, budgets, reports, and supporting materials.
  • Track all grant deadlines, activities, and communications in Salesforce.
  • Coordinate with program staff to gather data, outcomes, and updates for reports.
  • Maintain positive relationships with foundation officers and key contacts.
  • Provide quarterly progress reports on grants, renewals, and new submissions.

Qualifications
  • 3–7 years of experience in foundation relations, grant writing, or nonprofit fundraising with a proven record of securing 6 figure gifts
  • Strong writing and editing skills with attention to accuracy and tone.
  • Excellent project management and deadline discipline.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other donor databases.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely.
  • Experience working for libertarian and/or conservative think tanks
