Eugene Kontorovich

Professor of Law, Northwestern University

Eugene Kontorovich is a professor of law at Northwestern University and a policy advisor for legal affairs at The Heartland Institute. Kontorovich’s research spans the fields of constitutional law, international law, and law and economics. He has authored a series of papers that extend “transaction cost” analysis from private law to constitutional law. His scholarship has been relied on in important foreign relations cases in the federal courts, and historic piracy cases in the U.S. and abroad. He is currently writing about Second Amendment issues, and the interplay of the U.S. Constitution and international law.

He went to college and law school at the University of Chicago, where he also taught for two years as a visiting professor. After law school, he clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Before coming to Northwestern, he was a professor at George Mason University Law School.

Kontorovich was honored with the Federalist Society’s Bator Award, and a residential fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies, in Princeton, N.J.
