While charter schools remain the nation’s fastest-growing school reform model of the past decade, the rate of formation of new schools slowed significantly in the first year of the new century, dashing President Clinton’s hopes of seeing 3,000 charter schools in operation by the year 2000.
According to figures released recently by the Center for Education Reform, some 1,689 charter schools are in operation today, with a total of 1,994 expected by September. By then, the schools will serve more than a half-million students.
In May, the Center released its latest directory of the nation’s charter schools, profiling each school by name, address, phone number, contact information, enrollment figures, grades served, and educational program. The 293-page directory also includes state and national statistics on charter schools with a state-by-state ranking of charter school laws.
