Plant Seeds of Freedom for Generations to Come

“Now, gentlemen, let us do something today which the world may talk of hereafter.”
— Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood just before the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805

The Story Behind the Acorn

“He constantly carried acorns in his pockets, and whenever he found a vacant place on his walks, he would plant one, in the hope that they might grow to supply the navy with timber.”
-"A Selection from the Correspondence of Admiral Lord Collingwood," edited by G. L. Newnham Collingwood, published in 1828.
Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood (1748–1810) was one of Britain’s greatest naval heroes — a man of integrity, loyalty, and foresight. A close friend and fellow officer of Admiral Nelson, Collingwood commanded the Royal Navy’s ships at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, leading the fleet to one of the most decisive victories in naval history.

But Collingwood’s true legacy extended beyond battle. When he returned home to Northumberland, he developed a quiet ritual. Each time he walked the hills near his home, he carried acorns in his pocket, dropping them into the earth wherever he saw open ground. He wanted to ensure that oak trees — vital for shipbuilding and national defense — would continue to grow for generations to come.

It was an act of faith and patriotism: Collingwood knew he would never see those oaks mature, but he planted them anyway — for the benefit of his country and for people he would never meet. His story became a symbol of visionary stewardship — a man thinking not just of his lifetime, but of the world his country would inherit.

The Freedom Rising Legacy Society draws inspiration from this story. Just as Collingwood’s acorns would one day become the mighty timbers of British ships, today’s legacy donors plant the seeds of freedom that will uphold the foundation of liberty for generations yet to come.

Each planned gift to Heartland — whether through a will, trust, or other estate gift — is an acorn of freedom, ensuring that the principles of limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty will continue to grow strong long after we are gone.
