Lawyers for a woman charged, along with her boyfriend, with murdering a Washington couple, spent two hours in court recently arguing over whether she would be allowed to buy candy bars and Cocoa Puffs cereal while in jail.
The argument isn’t over–it’s been continued until next month.
Jail staff opposed giving the woman the right to purchase sweet snacks because they can be used to barter for “favors” from other inmates. They can also be used to brew “jailhouse hooch.”
The woman’s lawyer argued, however, that she has a constitutional right to buy candy at the jail commissary.
