The huge jumps in pay and pension benefits that have been going to municipal workers, school district employees and others who call themselves public servants have been happening for years. Thanks to “Retirement perks cost towns millions; Government officials add thousands to their pensions while suburbs face budget woes” (Page 1, Sept. 17), by Tribune reporters Joseph Ryan and Joe Mahr, more people have become aware.
They have given us vivid examples of how the government employees who receive these outrageous compensation packages and the local elected leaders who grant them apparently care nothing about the taxpayers who fund them.
