William Happer, a professor at Princeton University, received the 2015 Frederick Seitz Memorial Award from presenter S. Fred Singer of the Science and Environmental Policy Project at the Tenth International Conference on Climate Change keynote dinner.
Happer’s presentation dropped the audience down the rabbit hole with his speech “Alice in Climateland,” a satirical parallel to Lewis Carroll’s fantasy novel.
Happer launched straight into Alice’s psychedelic “drink me” mishap to relay the dismay he felt years ago when first confronted by alarmists claiming increased CO2 causes “harmful warming, carbon pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and Noah’s flood.
“Is this Climateland?” said Happer. “Have they been hitting the Drink Me bottle? Are they all mad?” Happer asked.
Borrowing from the grinning Cheshire Cat scene, Happer recounted Alice’s complaint about running into so many crazy people. The Cat responded, “Oh, you can’t help that, we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
Alice replied, “How do you know I’m mad?”
The Cat said, “You must be mad, or you wouldn’t have come here.”
“There is plenty of madness in Climateland,” Happer said. “In Climateland, people believe in computer models that don’t work.”
Happer says computer models have projected ever-increasing temperatures, but actual measured temperatures have plateaued for 18 years. Happer says with each year, the gap between model projections and measured temperatures grows.
Happer showed a photo of Shanghai used by alarmists to decry “carbon pollution.” One could barely make out the buildings because the smog was so thick. There’s just one problem, as Happer’s caption pointed out: “Real pollution in Shanghai: If you can see it, it’s not CO2.” Carbon dioxide is transparent, so the visible pollution in the photo was ordinary smog, not carbon dioxide.
Happer says carbon dioxide is a natural gas and that “[a]atmospheric CO2 is very beneficial to plants.”
Continuing his Alice in Wonderland analogy, Happer said, “In Wonderland, white roses are painted red to please the queen of hearts. In Climateland, data are adjusted to bolster the party line.”
Not only is data tortured to produce the desired result in Climateland, trials are demanded for any doubters, with the results predetermined: “Sentence first, verdict afterwards.”
“Like Wonderland, Climateland is mostly a house of cards,” Happer said.
Happer’s says despite all of the information, there is a simple plan to escape Climateland: “Spread the truth. And never give in—never, never, never.”
