Democracy in Chicago and in Wisconsin

The people of Chicago have delivered control of the entire municipal government to the Chicago Teachers Union and to people who believe that, in times of national emergency, all civil liberties may be suspended except the right of leftist extremists to assemble, peaceably or not.

The people of Wisconsin have elected as the swing justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court a judge who sees the judiciary as a legislative body, charged with deciding political questions with partisan enthusiasm.

H. L. Mencken once defined democracy as “the theory that the common people know what they want, and they deserve to get it good and hard.”
