Dear Editor:
In a recent letter to the editor, an attorney loosely charges that Mona Charen contributes to the “Sovietization of our legal system” because she very judiciously and accurately cites “Lawsuit Abuse Fortnightly,” a newsletter produced by The Heartland Institute. (See “Charen and lawyers,” Sun-Gazette, July 23 ).
The Heartland Institute is not an “ultraconservative” or partisan group at all. It is a national nonprofit research and education organization devoted to turning ideas into social movements that empower people. Our only interest in the debate over legal reform is to see that equal justice for all is achieved.
“Lawsuit Abuse Fortnightly” compiles blatant and documented abuses of the legal system by activist judges and unscrupulous trial attorneys. These are often cases where lawyers have abused the justice system and made a mockery of the Bill of Rights in the name of that mighty dollar.
