Low-Tax Loss Leader Goes Up in Smoke

If the North Carolina budget becomes law, the Tar Heel State will no longer enjoy the lowest cigarette taxes in the nation, probably leading many shoppers to drive across the border to other low-tax states such as South Carolina, FreedomWorks State Director Allen Page said.

Members of the state legislature who oppose the tax hike echo this argument.

According to the Associated Press on June 13, State Rep. Bill Daughtridge (R-Nash) said the low cigarette tax “is our hook, it’s our loss leader. It is why people stop.”
