The Board of Directors of the Council for Affordable Health Insurance (CAHI) announced on November 15, 2001 that Merrill Matthews Jr., Ph.D., has joined CAHI as Acting Director to lead its health reform efforts.

Earlier that year, Matthews was named senior fellow in health policy at The Heartland Institute and became an assistant editor for its newest publication, Health Care News.

Bill O’Connor, chairman of the CAHI Board of Directors, made the announcement. “Dr. Matthews’ extensive experience in health policy makes him an excellent choice to lead CAHI as we meet the challenges of ensuring that all Americans have access to affordable health insurance,” O’Connor noted. “Merrill’s strong personal commitment to free markets and choice mirrors CAHI’s, and under his leadership we expect to continue as the leading advocate for a free and competitive health care marketplace.”

Matthews will replace Nona Wegner, who has led the association since 1999. Wegner announced in 2001 that she would be joining Citizens for Better Medicare, and she has been working with that organization in a part-time capacity.

CAHI is a research and advocacy association of insurance carriers active in the individual, small group, medical savings account, and senior citizen markets. CAHI’s membership includes more than 40 insurance companies, small businesses, physicians, actuaries, and insurance brokers. Since 1992, CAHI has actively advocated market-oriented solutions to the problems facing America’s health care system.
