MEDIA ADVISORY: Heartland Institute, Allies Respond to Taxpayers’ Savings Grants Push in Texas Legislature

Published May 23, 2011

Texas state Rep. Sid Miller (R-Stephenville) on Monday planned to introduce an amendment creating the Taxpayers’ Savings Grants Program, which would allow parents to send their children to the private or public school of their choice. The Heartland Institute, as well as the San Antonio-based Justice Foundation and other allies, say the plan will save taxpayers in Texas $2 billion over two years – half the amount the state tentatively plans to cut from education spending – and will improve the state’s education system by allowing money to follow the student to the most efficient and successful schools.

“The Taxpayers’ Savings Grants Program is a great opportunity to save taxpayers $2 billion a year while allowing those parents who are not satisfied with their children’s current public schools to try something else. It’s difficult to imagine why anyone would object to such a fair and common-sense reform effort. Critics of this program need to check their premises. Is it really the best interests of the children that motivates their opposition, or the self interests of those who profit from current school policies?”

“It’s time for money to follow children, not systems, to the best educational option. Taxpayers’ Savings Grants are an idea whose time has come. The grants save money and reallocate more resources to classrooms. They even increase per-pupil spending for children remaining in public schools. This is a massive win-win for Texas families and taxpayers.”
