NEA Gave $12 Million to Advocacy Groups

If you ran a liberal political, advocacy, or research organization and you went to the National Education Association last year with your hand out, chances are good you came away with a fistful of dollars. An Education Intelligence Agency analysis of NEA’s financial disclosure report for the 2006-07 fiscal year reveals the national teachers union contributed $12 million to a wide variety of advocacy groups.

The total nearly tripled its contributions from the previous fiscal year.

The expenditures include a host of payments connected with ballot initiatives in November 2006 and the first eight months of 2007. They range from $2.3 million to Citizens for Education, which campaigned in favor of a school funding initiative in Michigan, down to several smaller grants to groups such as Rainbow/PUSH, FairTest, Amnesty International, Sierra Club, and Human Rights Campaign.
