New York Governor Supports Tax Credit Program

Published May 22, 2015

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is supporting a tax credit for private education. The tax credit is worth a total of $150 million, according to a report in The Buffalo News. State teachers unions oppose the measure and it’s still being debated in the legislature.

The program allots $70 million for credits for families with annual incomes below $60,000 who send their children to private school. $50 million worth of tax credits would go to private donors funding private school scholarships. Another $20 million would be set aside for donations to public schools and non-profit charter schools. An additional $10 million would go to tax credits for public school teachers to use on school supplies.
