… Norquist Calls for Further Expansion

Published October 1, 1998

On August 4, Milwaukee Mayor John O. Norquist announced that he would support extending the Milwaukee voucher program to students whose families are at much higher income levels than the program currently permits, or even the removal of income limits altogether. The mayor also supports removing the current requirement that teachers in the Milwaukee Public Schools reside in the city.

A poll conducted by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel after Norquist’s August 4 statement showed that 60 percent of respondents favored the inclusion of middle- and upper-income students in the program. Only 34 percent of those polled opposed such an expansion of the program.
