North Carolina Choice Program Expected to Double Following Court Ruling

Published August 1, 2015

Following the recent legal victory for school choice in North Carolina, the number of children likely to utilize the state’s Opportunity Scholarship Program could more than double. According to a report by Education Week, state officials have already allotted 2,642 scholarships for the upcoming school year.

The Opportunity Scholarship Program awarded 1,216 last year in the wake of a lawsuit challenging the program’s constitutionality. Now, since the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the program, the number of students from low-income families receiving this assistance could continue to grow.
