The Chicago Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society
presents:
A Luncheon Address by
Paula Stannard
The Medical Malpractice Crisis:
An Overview of a National Health Care
Phenomenon that Threatens the Practice of Medicine
Paula Stannard is a Deputy General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She is a former associate of the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Meagher, Slate, and Flom (Illinois), and a former President of the Chicago Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society. At HHS, the cabinet department with the largest budget in the Executive Branch, Stannard works on, among other things, issues of medical liability reform and patient safety.
Stannard will discuss the federal perspective on the medical liability crisis. She will also address federal initiatives to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors, including the use of information technology and patient safety legislation. Join us as she addresses the following questions: Why have medical malpractice insurance premiums increased in Illinois? Is the problem limited to Illinois? Has the rising cost of medical malpractice insurance changed the way doctors and hospitals provide services? What can be done?
