PRESS RELEASE: Heartland Institute Marks National SAVE Day with Call for Child Safety Accounts

Published October 24, 2018

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL (October 24, 2018) – Today is National SAVE DAY, Students Against Violence Everywhere, which is held each year during Safe Schools Week (the third full week of October). The day is dedicated to raise awareness to the bullying and violence plaguing American schools. In fact, approximately 160,000 students skip school each year to avoid potential violence. On this day, students are encouraged to write positive messages and look out for fellow students in an effort to curb the school violence epidemic. #SAVEDAY

This year, The Heartland Institute published a Policy Brief proposing Child Safety Accounts, which would empower parents to choose a school where their child will be safe from violence.

“National SAVE day is a reminder that bullying and school violence remains far too prevalent. Hence, Child Safety Accounts are needed more than ever to ensure students attend safe schools.”

“National SAVE Day highlights helpful ways for kids to help each other feel more included and involved. However, it would probably be better for some children who have been bullied or assaulted at school to attend a different school. Unfortunately, state and federal policies don’t allow this for the overwhelming number of children. Effectively, only wealthy parents have the ability to move their children from an unsafe school and place them elsewhere. That right should be afforded to all parents and children, and with Heartland’s Child Safety Account program, this dream can become a reality.”
