Far-left candidates, especially members of the Democratic Socialists of America, are doubling down on the GND.
President Donald Trump, probably more than any politician in recent memory, understands that the United States must be energy dominant with constant access to abundant, affordable, and reliable energy for myriad reasons.
President Trump also understands that the only surefire way to ensure that the United States has uninterrupted ample energy on hand is by going all in on the only energy sources that can supply dependable power no matter the weather conditions or time of day.
Under present circumstances, based on a recent Heartland Institute energy scorecard, “natural gas makes the most sense according to the affordable, reliable, and clean standard, with nuclear, hydro, and coal not far behind. Biomass trails by a moderate margin while wind and solar stand apart as the least desirable power sources.”
The revelation that fossil fuels and nuclear get the best energy bang for the buck should not be a surprise. Neither should the fact that wind and solar are far less reliable, more costly, and much worse for the environment.
Despite these fundamental flaws, climate alarmists have touted the Green New Deal as climate change panacea for the past several years.
In 2019, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) introduced the Green New Deal (GND) resolution into both houses of Congress, claiming it would address “the existential crisis of climate change.”
In the years since the GND made its debut in Congress, climate alarmism has waned considerably as Americans have come to the realization that the planet’s climate has always changed and will always change. Whereas most Americans falsely believed that the use of fossil fuels would usher in the end of the world, now most Americans know otherwise.
The triumph of climate realism has been more than a roadblock for those seeking to install the GND, it has become a dead end for the GND.
However, this does not mean that the Green New Deal is gone for good.
With the 2026 midterms rapidly approaching, far-left candidates, especially members of the Democratic Socialists of America, are doubling down on the GND, with a new twist.
“The Green New Deal, frankly, is a floor now, not a ceiling, for what we need to actually be looking at doing,” said DSA member Melat Kiros last month, who is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Kiros emphasized that the GND must be resurrected and “focused on” “the missing component of AI,” and that “there is an interesting connection that I think is being intentionally and correctly drawn between AI and our climate right now in a way that is going to propel us toward being able to pass some really meaningful climate legislation.”
Kiros is not alone in calling for the GND as the solution to misguided AI alarmism.
“We don’t talk about this enough, but we need to pass the Green New Deal… to create a just transition of jobs,” declared Democrat Adam Hamawy, who is also running for a seat in the U.S. House.
It is not just politicians who are changing their tune and clamoring for AI alarmism as the new justification for the GND.
