U.S. Automakers Don’t Need More Incentives

Published May 16, 2006

Dear Editor:

Gary Luft recommends President Bush prod Congress to provide incentives for U.S. automakers to build more fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles. [“What should Bush say to the Big Three?” May 16]

The huge financial losses and declining market share of the U.S. automakers ought to be incentive enough for them to build such cars.

As Mr. Luft points out, Honda and Toyota already build and sell hybrid vehicles here. If foreign firms can do this without special government incentives, so can U.S. automakers.

Sincerely,

Steve Stanek
