We Are Already Behind In Math And Science, So Why Try To Exceed In English?

Linda Wertheimer exposes the mediocrity in American academia, which continues to dumb down our next generation of college students (“Many Colleges Ignore SAT Writing Test”, September 20). So Georgetown agrees with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s decision to “not count writing test results as eligibility criteria for Division I and II athletes” until school administrators can “see more conclusive research from the College Board” that confirms the writing portion of the SAT is a predictor of student performance. After all, Shakespeare never had a jump shot, right?

Maybe students should read the writing on the wall in the decline of the American academy even if they cannot write about it?
