Who Is Conrad Meier?

Conrad Meier is a senior fellow at The Heartland Institute and managing editor of Health Care News, Heartland’s monthly newspaper on market-based health care reform.

Meier is a former feature writer for Williams and Wilkins medical journals and past Missouri state chairman of the health insurance committee of the National Association of Life Underwriters. He recently retired as assistant in research at the Center for Advanced Social Research, University of Missouri-Columbia.

Meier began his professional insurance career as an agent with Lincoln National Life, received their Associate of the Year Award in 1981, and consistently qualified for the national Quality Award. In 1981 he established Meier Insurance Services, Inc., of Gurnee, Illinois, and served as its president until 1991, when he retired his agency and relocated to Columbia, Missouri. He then served for several years as a health insurance consultant for H.J. Black Insurance Services.

Meier writes a monthly column for Broker News (an insurance trade publication), regular features for Medical Sentinel (the journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons), and book reviews for Ideas on Liberty (Foundation for Economic Education). His writing has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, Milwaukee Journal, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Columbia Missourian, Oakland Press, Life Association News, National Health Underwriter, Patient Outcomes in Managed Care (Williams and Wilkins), The National Underwriter, Best’s Review, The Illinois Journal of Medicine, Modern Maturity, Financial World, Investor’s Business Daily, USA Today, and elsewhere.

Meier is the author of two Heartland Policy Studies: “How to Implement Kassebaum-Kennedy” (#78, March 1997), and “Extending Affordable Health Insurance to the Uninsurable” (#91, August 1999), as well as a study for the American Legislative Exchange Council titled “New Era of Health Care Regulation: Patient Protection Laws and Mandated Health Benefits at the State Level” (December 1998).
