Former Astronaut Says Earth Not in Peril from Global Warming

Published March 6, 2009

New York, NY, March 6, 2009–The American astronaut who shot the iconic photo of Earth called “The Blue Marble” says the planet is in peril–“but not from global warming.”

Jack Schmitt–an Apollo 17 astronaut who walked on the moon in 1972, in the last such mission–is among more than 70 scientists, economists, and policy experts who will confront the subject of global warming at the second International Conference on Climate Change in New York City March 8-10.

Schmitt argues that the real peril to the planet comes from the widespread rejection of sound science on the global warming question. Scientists who take a skeptical view of global warming, he says, “are being intimidated” by others when they disagree with the idea that burning fossil fuels has led to increased global temperatures and higher sea levels.

“They’ve seen too many of their colleagues lose grant funding when they haven’t gone along with the so-called political consensus that we’re in a human-caused global warming crisis,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt will be available for interviews during the conference, March 8-10, at the Marriott Marquis, 1535 Broadway (corner of 45th Street).

To arrange interview time with Jack Schmitt or any of the other conference speakers, contact Dan Miller ([email protected]) at (312) 377-4000, or Tammy Nash ([email protected]), (312) 377-4000.

Accredited media representatives will be provided complimentary registration at the conference, which addresses the question, “Global warming: Was it ever really a crisis?”

Heartland Institute Executive Vice President Dan Miller said, “All conference expenses will be covered by admission fees and individual and foundation donors to Heartland. No corporate dollars for the event were solicited or accepted. Cosponsors of the event, numbering more than 55, did not pay a fee or make a donation to cosponsor. The 25-year-old Heartland Institute has not received any money from the Koch or Scaife foundations in at least a decade.”

MEDIA REGISTRATION FOR THE CONFERENCE WILL TAKE PLACE OUTSIDE THE JULLIARD ROOM ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE FIFTH FLOOR OF THE MARRIOTT MARQUIS. ANY SPECIAL ELECTRONIC OR OTHER TECHNICAL NEEDS OF BROADCAST MEDIA, BLOGGERS, ETC. SHOULD BE DISCUSSED WITH HEARTLAND IN ADVANCE OF THE CONFERENCE.
