Adjustment Errors Created Nearly Half of IPCC Warming

Climate Change Weekly #57

Nearly half of the claimed warming during the past century did not occur in the real world but is merely the creation of flawed data adjustments, reports a new paper presented at a meeting of the European Geosciences Union.

Removing flawed adjustments to raw temperature readings shows the Earth warmed merely 0.42 degrees during the past century, rather than the 0.7 to 0.8 degrees claimed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Government analysts take raw data gathered from temperature stations around the world and adjust the temperature readings in several ways before releasing official temperature reports. Skeptics have long pointed out that the majority of the analysts are far from objective referees of the raw temperature data. Most are outspoken global warming alarmists who accumulate and retain large budgets, staff, and media attention only so long as a global warming crisis appears to exist.

The European Geosciences Union paper points out the analysts routinely discard readings from temperature stations showing cooling temperatures and give unwarranted weight to readings from temperature stations showing warming temperatures. Moreover, they often adjust the data at individual temperature stations reporting cooling temperatures in a way that allows them to claim temperatures are actually rising at these stations.

Meteorologist Anthony Watts has written an excellent summary of the paper after Marcel Crok first brought the paper to public attention.

GREENPEACE CO-FOUNDER: THANK GOODNESS FOR CO2 EMISSIONS

Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, Ph.D., told ClimateDepot.com that carbon dioxide emissions are benefiting life on Earth. Plant life and global ecosystems are better off as a result of human CO2 emissions, said Moore. “Thank goodness we came along and reversed the 150 million-year trend of reduced CO2 levels in the global atmosphere. Long live the humans,” said Moore.

NEW STUDIES SHOW CURRENT TEMPS NO WARMER THAN MEDIEVAL WARM PERIOD

Temperatures during the Medieval Warm Period were at least as warm as today, according to two peer-reviewed studies published this spring. The two studies “show that the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) existed, and was similar to current temperatures. These comprehensive studies suggest current temperatures are not unusual,” Australian science writer Jo Nova explains on her popular Web site. Nova summarizes the studies, reproduces temperature graphs from the studies, and provides links to the studies.

OCEAN TEMPERATURES SHOW LOW CLIMATE SENSITIVITY TO CO2

Ocean temperature variations since 1955 show lower climate sensitivity to carbon dioxide emissions than what is assumed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, according to a new paper by climate scientist Roy Spencer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Spencer has submitted the paper to the Journal of Geophysical Research, which will issue a publishing decision later this year. Spencer provides a brief summary of his paper on his Web site.

MEDIA CREATES MYTHICAL GLOBAL WARMING “CONSENSUS”

Media assertions of a scientific consensus on global warming are simply a myth, science writer Larry Bell explains at Forbes.com. The frequently asserted “98 percent consensus” is derived from a very small number of scientists and addresses meaningless issues, while a far greater number of scientists are on record saying humans are not causing a global warming crisis. Bell’s article is a must-read for anyone who discusses and debates global warming.

GLOBAL WARMING PREMATURELY BLAMED FOR INTENSE PRECIPITATION

Land-use changes, such as crop irrigation and the creation of lakes and reservoirs via dams, play a significant role in intensifying precipitation events, according to World Climate Report. Referencing more than a dozen studies on the topic, World Climate Report explains how humans are making more water vapor available for storm systems and influencing precipitation events in ways other than carbon dioxide emissions.

CLIMATE REFUGEES FLEEING COLD ALASKA

While global warming alarmists and their media allies claim global warming is responsible for hot summertime weather in the lower 48 states, many Alaskans are getting fed up with yet another cold summer and are leaving the state. Alaska is suffering from one of its coldest July months on record, continuing a recent trend of colder-than-normal temperatures, according to Anchorage television station KTVA.
