If a ship is sinking, does it make sense to complain about the deploying of lifeboats being a draining of resources from the vessel? Columnist Stephen Henderson has vividly explained why Detroit ought to be thrown wide open to the introduction of independently managed charter schools to rescue children from a dysfunctional public-school system. (“Open up city school district to choices,” Sept. 28.)
The emphasis ought to be on what’s best for the children, not for the system.
University chartering of the schools would help ensure oversight and quality. This approach makes sense for numerous urban areas, but Henderson gives compelling reasons Detroit ought to be in the vanguard of the charter-school movement.
