AMS Survey Shows Meteorologists Are Skeptics

Climate Change Weekly #41

An American Meteorological Society survey of its members shows meteorologists remain skeptical that humans are causing a global warming crisis. The survey was sent to all AMS voting members and was returned by more than a quarter of recipients.

According to the survey, 89 percent of AMS meteorologists believe global warming is happening, but only a minority (30 percent) is very worried about global warming.

Slightly more than half of AMS meteorologists (59 percent) say recent global warming has been caused primarily by humans. Regardless of what is causing global warming, only 38 percent of AMS meteorologists say global warming will be very harmful during the next 100 years.

AMS meteorologists clearly refute the assertion that “the debate is over.” Only 33 percent of AMS meteorologists say they “somewhat disagree” or “strongly disagree” with the statement, “There is conflict among AMS members on the issue of global warming.” A majority (53 percent) “somewhat agree” or “strongly agree” with the statement, while 15 percent neither agree nor disagree.

GLOBAL TEMPERATURES REMAIN COOL IN 2012

The first two months of 2012 were cooler than the 30-year average, NASA satellite instruments report. Global temperatures for the month of February were 0.12 degrees Celsius below the 30-year average.

KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE WOULD CAUSE NEGLIGIBLE WARMING

The cumulative temperature impact of the Keystone XL pipeline would be approximately 0.0001 degrees Celsius per year, according to an analysis by environmental scientist Chip Knappenberger. Knappenberger’s analysis rebuts the assertions contained in a letter recently sent to the U.S. Congress by Fakegate figure Peter Gleick and 14 other scientist-activists.

ALARMISTS CRY FOUL OVER NON-POLITICAL CLIMATE CURRICULUM

Global warming activists are in an uproar about a proposed Heartland Institute program that aims to provide non-political climate change materials to teachers and students. The outrage over a non-political curriculum reveals the extremist views and tactics of global warming activists.

CURRY DISCUSSES PROPER MEDIA ROLE IN CLIMATE COVERAGE

Newspaper reporters and other members of the media frequently report they struggle with the question of how much attention to give skeptics of the notion that humans are causing a global warming crisis. “Lukewarmist” Judith Curry has posted an interesting discussion of this topic on her Web site that is well worth reading.
