Peter Gleick Slammed for Attacks on Skeptics

Published January 13, 2012

Climate Change Weekly #34

Global warming activist Peter Gleick is taking a beating for authoring a column in Forbes.com that singled out scientists who disagree with his global warming alarmism and attacked them (and others) by name with particularly misleading assertions.

Gleick singled out by name such scientists as Roy Spencer, John Christy, Anthony Watts, and Steve McIntyre and accused them of such things as misrepresenting scientific facts to the U.S. Congress. He also accused them of being “anti-science.”

In my weekly Forbes.com column, posted January 12, I responded to Gleick’s column by documenting how Gleick himself repeatedly misrepresented the nature of the global warming debate and revealed his glaring ignorance about the issues that divide global warming “alarmists” and global warming “skeptics.”

As I noted in my column, “Gleick, like so many of his alarmist colleagues, believes that anybody who disagrees with his scientific theories is ‘anti-science.’ Yet it is hard to imagine objective tornado data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to be ‘anti-science.’ … The term ‘anti-science’ most appropriately applies to those who refuse to consider competing evidence and scientific theories that raise doubts about their own theories. This term applies in spades to Gleick.”

Gleick’s column is available here. My column responding to Gleick is available here.

SKEPTIC DAVID WHITEHOUSE WINS CLIMATE BET

Global warming skeptic David Whitehouse has won a bet with alarmist James Annan regarding record high temperatures. At the prodding of a BBC radio program, Whitehouse and Annan agreed in December 2007 to wager on whether any year between 2008 and 2011 would become the warmest in the instrumental temperature record. No new record was set and Annan lost, despite his cockiness at the time he made the wager.

AL GORE CHANNELS HIS INNER MONTY HALL

You may not know it, but Al Gore is a master of knee-slapping humor and comedic entertainment. He may even be the next Monty Hall of “Let’s Make a Deal” fame. Gore is betting on his ability to entertain the masses with a new line of family games that coincidentally raise awareness about global warming. Just when we thought we could escape moral and political hectoring from our in-laws with a welcome foray into Milton Bradley-land, family game night has taken on a whole new level of nagging nannyism.

PATRICK MICHAELS EXPLAINS ‘LUKEWARMING’

The Earth is warming, but at a substantially slower pace than predicted by United Nations computer models. Global warming is occurring, explains climate scientist Patrick Michaels, but at a pace that can best be described as “lukewarming.”

CONSENSUS SCIENCE TAKES A BEATING ON ATMOSPHERIC ACIDITY

The asserted consensus of scientists has long held that humans are primarily to blame for acid rain and related atmospheric acidity issues. However, a new study in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Geoscience reports nature is responsible for 90 percent of the Earth’s atmospheric acidity. The study is sending major shockwaves through the scientific community.

SOLAR VARIANCE EXPLAINS WARMING

Duke University physicist Nicola Scafetta has published a peer-reviewed study explaining solar variance is the primary cause of recent global warming. Scafetta’s study also explains how the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is predicting more twenty-first century warming than is likely to occur. Larry Bell explains the key findings in the Scafetta paper in his weekly Forbes.com column.

ANATOMY OF A PEER-REVIEW SHAKEDOWN

Climategate emails document efforts by global warming activists to strong-arm peer-reviewed science journals from publishing studies contradicting the alarmist storyline. World Climate Report provides an in-depth look at the intimidation process at work, courtesy of global warming alarmists Michael Mann and Tom Wigley.
