The Scientific Method struck a valiant blow against climate denialism in Germany this week, as scientists from around the globe gathered to sort out climate change facts from fiction. The climate change conference, hosted by the European Institute for Climate and Energy (known by its German acronym EIKE) and co-sponsored by The Heartland Institute, attracted nearly 200 attendees and marks ongoing global momentum in favor of sound science and against factually unsupported alarmism.

American atmospheric physicist S. Fred Singer, whose resume of scientific accomplishments runs longer than Al Gore’s electricity bill, explained how natural variance accounts for most of the global warming of the past century. The German attendees treated Singer like a rock star.

Nils-Axel Mörner, former head of the Paleogeophysics and Geodynamics Department at Stockholm University, documented a dramatic deceleration of sea-level rise during the past 40 years. Nir Shaviv, a professor of astrophysics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, showed how cosmic rays account for much recent global warming. Journalist Donna Laframboise related how she discovered an appalling prevalence of incompetence and bias among lead authors for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The conference’s unmistakable lesson was that the scientific evidence is woefully short of supporting alarmist assertions that humans are causing a global warming crisis. To the extent the scientific evidence leads to a particular conclusion, the conclusion is that humans are modestly enhancing a natural warming cycle that fortunately rescued the planet from the Little Ice Age.

SATELLITE DATA SHOW SLOWER GREENLAND ICE SHEET MELT

The Greenland ice sheet is melting at a much slower pace than claimed by global warming alarmists, Princeton University researchers report in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Satellite data show the Greenland ice sheet melting at a pace of 8 billion tons per year rather than alarmist claims of 30 billion tons per year.

PACIFIC SEA SURFACE DATA CONFIRM NO WARMING IN RECENT YEARS

Sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean have not risen during the past 16 years, confirming data indicating the Earth has not warmed during the past 16 years. The Pacific Ocean data cast doubt on alarmist assertions that the oceans are soaking up heat and accounting for “missing warming” that was predicted in alarmist computer models but has not occurred in the real world.

ALARMISTS CONTRADICT EACH OTHER ON WINTER WEATHER CLAIMS

Global warming alarmists can’t seem to get their stories straight on how global warming will affect winter storms, Steven Goddard reports on his Real Science Web site. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says global warming should cause warmer winters with less snow. In the wake of recent cold winters with abundant snow, alarmists are attempting to re-write their predictions.

RECORD LACK OF INTENSE HURRICANE STRIKES CONTINUES

The United States is undergoing a record period of nonexistent major hurricanes, NOAA hurricane data show. To merely revert to the long-term mean, the U.S. would have to experience a remarkably severe period of major hurricanes during the next several years, environmental scientist Roger Pielke Jr. reports.

CARBON TAX WOULD BE ‘USELESS’ FOR CLIMATE MITIGATION

A carbon tax would be a useless tool to mitigate global warming, environmental scientist Chip Knappenberger explains in a Master Resource article. The impact of a carbon tax on global temperatures would be “virtually none,” Knappenberger explains. “Any tax on carbon dioxide is clearly a case of not getting what you pay for. You will pay a lot, and receive nothing in return, or at least nothing that you will ever realize, or that could be proven,” writes Knappenberger.

CLIMATE DEPOT DEBUNKS EXTREME WEATHER CLAIMS AT U.N. CONFERENCE

A delegation of Climate Depot representatives at U.N. climate talks this week presented a 35-page paper debunking alarmist extreme weather claims. According to the Climate Depot paper, deaths due to extreme weather are radically declining, global tropical cyclone activity is near historic lows, the frequency of major U.S. hurricanes has declined, the number of tornadoes has dramatically declined, droughts are not unusually frequent or severe, and there is no evidence of historically unusual weather in recent years.
