The superconducting super collider (SSC) is the subject of interest among government officials in the seven states, including Illinis and Michigan, that are finalists in a U.S Department of Energy Competition for the multibillion-dollar project. Proponents of locating the SSC in Illinois have emphasized its potential value to the state’s economy in terms of new jobs and increased tax revenues. But like so many taxpayer-funded projects touted for their economic development potential, the SSC may not yield the benefits claimed for it.
