On Thursday, July 22, the U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote on a measure by Rep. Gene Taylor (D-MS) to add wind coverage to the National Flood Insurance Program. Eli Lehrer, national director of The Heartland Institute’s Center on Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate, notes that a wide variety of groups say the measure, H.R. 1264, is bad public policy.
“This measure is a terrible, terrible idea, and that’s why groups ranging from the National Wildlife Federation to the Consumer Federation of America oppose it,” Lehrer said. “It would impose a multibillion-dollar liability on the nation’s taxpayers, undermine productive private businesses, destroy areas of great natural beauty, and endanger lives by encouraging people to live in harm’s way.”
